  How to Attach Eyelets

  Materials needed:
  • Your project
  • Eyelets (Note the size of the eyelet. Most are 1/8" or 3/16")
  • Eyelet setter
  • Hole punch that fits the size of the eyelet (ie: 1/8" eyelets need 1/8" holes; 3/16" eyelets need 3/16" holes)
  • Mat
  • Hammer (A normal-sized hammer works fine)

  How-to:

Punch a hole large enough for the eyelet.
  1. Once you decide where you want to place the eyelet, punch a hole large enough to fit the eyelet post through. You can use a small hole punch, circle punch or an anywhere hole punch. I use an awl, as I have one handy for other craft projects. (See Figure 1)

  2. Place your mat on a hard surface, such as a countertop or desk.

  3. Place the eyelet post in the punched hole. The decorative face of the eyelet should show on the decorated side of your paper. (See Figure 2)
Place the eyelet right-side up into the punched hole.

  4. Hold the eyelet firmly in place while you flip the paper over on your mat. If it is a shaped eyelet, take care that the eyelet does not move when you flip the paper over. You do not want an eyelet charm set facing the wrong way. You can often adjust them once they are attached; however, some set securely and can not be easily turned.

  5. Place the rounded end of the eyelet setter onto the eyelet post. Hold the setter vertically. (See Figure 3)
Use the eyelet setter and hammer to attach the eyelet.
  6. Use your hammer to tap the top of eyelet setter several times. Don't be shy - give it several strong taps.

  7. Lift up the eyelet setter. The post of the eyelet folds back onto the paper. (See Figure 4) Some have rolled edges and others split to unfold like a flower. This may also depend on the thickness of your project. The important check is whether or not the eyelet is securely attached to the paper.

If it is not fully set, place the eyelet setter back onto the eyelet post, and give it several more taps. Some eyelets are easier to set than others. I find plain eyelets require only a few taps, while those attached to metal charms require more force.

  8. Once the eyelet is set properly, flip the paper over and check your work. Voila! Thread fiber through the eyelet to finish the tag.
