Design a Music CD Album

Does music hold special memories for you? Me too!

For Mother's Day, I designed an album of the music my mother loves and of the songs my sister and I listened to growing up.  Music was always playing and we danced often.  My sister and I also mixed CDs of our favorite songs to share with Mom.

For this project, you'll need:

  • CD envelope pattern
  • Cardstock and patterned papers
  • Chipboard or thin, acid-free artist's mat
  • Velcro dots as envelope closures
  • Ribbon for the binding
  • Embellishments
  • Awl to punch the spine holes
  • Basic supplies: adhesive and scissors

How to build a CD music album:
  1. Choose a color scheme.  For this album, I chose the Sharon Ann® Blue Garden papers and accents by Deja Views as my main theme, along with complementary cardstock and embellishments.

  2. Mix your music CDs. Make sure you record the order, song title and artist for each CD.  This information will go on the back of the envelope.

  3. Create labels for each CD. I scanned a patterned vellum sheet as a background for each CD label, then used the same formatting for each label. There are so many options on how you label the CDs - just have fun!
Quick tip:  Pick up plain white CD labels from an office supply store. They are fast and easy.

  4. Now you'll construct the album covers.  Cut the covers and spines from chipboard or acid-free matting (I picked up a sheet from an art store and they trimmed it for me.).  Cut 2 (two) 6"x6" squares for the front and back covers.  Cut 2 (two) 1"x6" rectangles for the spines.  Spray the wrong side of the paper with adhesive.  Position the spine and covers on the paper, leaving a 1" space between the spine and cover.  Leave a 1" allowance on each side of the cover.  Fold the edges of the paper over, securing the paper tightly over the cover.  Smooth out any wrinkles.  Once the adhesive dries, you'll also need to punch holes in the spine according to the pattern.  You're ready to decorate.

These are views of the back cover of my album (outside, then inside).

  5. For the CD envelopes, use the pattern provided.  Trace the pattern on your cardstock.  Cut out the envelope and fold along the "fold" lines.  Adhere the flaps on the bottom and sides to the front of the envelope following the pattern directions.  Once assembled, the size of the envelope should be roughly 5"x5".
  6. Now you're ready to decorate the envelope. Choose coordinating pictures and embellishments.   I chose pictures relevant for each album and used a variety of embellishments depending on the theme.  I made the envelopes "over the top" for fun.  Apply the velcro fasteners so that the top flap of the envelope closes securely.  Finally, punch holes in the spine area of the envelope to align with the holes in the covers.

  7. On the back of each envelope, record the song titles and artists. Embellish as desired.

  8. Now you're ready to put the album together.  Lines up the CD envelopes with the holes in the covers.  Lace with ribbon and tie securely.
